A shamanistic dream song of the Siberian Forest Nenetses
»

An example of a shamanistic song of one of the most eastern group of the Siberian Nenetses, namely the Pur river Forest Nenetses (Nye”shang). The Forest Nenetses have preserved their language and traditions surprisingly well, due to the relative isolation of their remote taiga territories along the river Pur and its tributaries. This recording was made by J. Niemi in September 1998 in the village of Tarko-Sale.

The singer, Lyalya Inyi”kavich Pankhey Pya”k, is a Forest Nenets fisher and hunter living on the River Upper Chasel’ka, adjoining the Selkup territories, is called a dyutilhtana, a seer of dreams. He was born in 1941 in the Kharampur taiga. His father was a tachipya, a shaman, who passed on his shamanistic knowledge to him . (photo J.Niemi)
